The Significance of the Sea

The sea has long been a source of fascination. Its sublime calm with chaos below has been regarded as both ominous and frightfully beautiful. The sea may be tied to death or eternity, and certainly has been approached in poetry and superstition with a supreme caution, acknowledging the power and majesty of the sea as something that humankind cannot control or tame. Even in these days of advanced technology, there is just no telling the sea what to do. And as human actions wreak havoc on the earth, the rising sea may be one of the first enemies to seek revenge.

The sea has often been viewed as a supernatural force of its own. Those towns by the sea may carry more superstitions than imaginable, and sailors also throughout history believed a number of superstitions relating to the sea. The sea was not something to be managed, but rather something to be heeded. Not listening to the sea was the easiest way to get into trouble. Bodies of waters are fickle, unreliable beasts which can take life in an instant, whether it is sea, river, lake. Yet the sea is also recognized as a most powerful kind of splendour which can teach of never ending cycle of existence, far away from the trivialities of an individual life. It is this power and the seeming eternity of the sea which lends to it a godly glow, and its ethereal beauty has astounded many. Though we may always be at its mercy, still are we lured by the call of the sea.
